Volunteers in Patrol

In 2007, Preston Highlands launched Volunteers In Patrol (VIP) designed to reduce crime through increased cooperation between citizens and the Dallas Police Department (DPD). Your neighbors donate time to patrol in their own vehicles equipped with a flashing amber light and VIP signs. They are trained to observe, recognize, and report suspicious or criminal activity. Detected activity is immediately reported to 9-1-1.

Speaking of volunteers, we could use more! Currently, we have 22 homeowners fully trained. Thanks to each of you. We appreciate your time and commitment!

WE NEED MORE OF YOU to make this program successful! If you have two hours (or more) a month to give, please join Volunteers in Patrol by completing the application and waiver of liability forms and delivering them to the North Central Substation along with a copy of your driver’s license. Completing one six-hour training session through the Dallas Police Department qualifies you as a patroller. Apply soon because classes fill very quickly!

The VIP program is non-confrontational. Volunteers are trained to not approach suspicious activity, but to back away and, if possible, remain in sight and observe until police respond. It also sends a message that Preston Highlands is aware, alert, and will not tolerate criminal activity.

Additionally, VIP personnel watch for situations or activity in the neighborhood that, while not suspicious, might create problems or criminal activity. For example: open garage or house doors that would allow unauthorized entry, wandering unattended children, and open yard gates that allow access to pools by children.

Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age, be in good health, have a valid driver’s license, and have no criminal record. They must complete applications for background checks. Once approved, applicants must complete six-hour training program administered by the DPD. The course consists of:

Instruction in patrol procedure and discipline
Safety
DPD geographical designations, divisions, beats, and reporting areas
Observation skills
Patrol log maintenance and record keeping
911 reporting procedures
